Now And Then

Four women who have been life-long friends reunite when one of them is about to have a child. When they meet, they reminisce about their youth together – in particular, the summer of 1970 when they were finally trying to establish their own self identity.

The movie takes you back to that summer in 1970, and we see the women when they were younger. It was a summer that changed them all. A summer of young love, murder mysteries, boys, family, self-discovery, but most importantly – friendship. They grew up together, they shaped each other. The impression that they made on one another has lasted a lifetime, and they never forgot it.

After that summer, years flew by and distance and time got in they way of some of the girls and their bond: but that did not deteriorate its strength.

Friendship is like a second family, and for some of these girls is was the best family they ever had.

This movie has a whole cast of powerful female actors: Rosie O'Donnell, Demi Moore, Melanie Griffith, Rita Wilson, Christina Ricci, Thora Birch, and more. It's a real sweet story with a really strong message about the power that friendship holds.

This movie also has a great soundtrack from the year of 1970 and I feel that it adds a lot to the movie. Although mostly a cutesy heartwarming film, it's also pretty funny at most parts and plays on child innocence and youthful wild hearts.

The Secret Garden

Mary always lived a privileged life – spoiled and loved and in the car of her two wealthy parents. All of this changed when both of her parents pass away and she is left an orphan. She is placed in the care of her father's friend – Lord Craven, and must learn to find her footing again even though she is such a young child.

She find her world completely up-side-down; no one spoils her, no one waits on her, and hardly anyone pays much attention to her. Lord Craven is a depressed older man that is dwelling on the passing of his late wife – and he disengages himself from everything within his own house. His own son who is crippled is hidden within the manor and ignored, and the house is kept by staff. Where is there room for Mary to grow?

In this cold house that's not a home, Mary finds some happiness in the maid, Martha, and her younger brother Dickon and they friendship that they provide her with. When they discover a secret garden that has been hidden for years just a little bit beyond the cold confines of the house – they find a place to escape, a place to be happy, and a place to grow.

This movie should be a childhood favorite for any child. It's a magical story. It has been told time and time again and made into numerous movies: my recommended version is the one that was made in 1993 and directed by Agnieszka Holland. This is the version that I watched as a child and this is the one that I enjoyed the most out of the 3 I have seen. It was captured beautifully on screen and the garden almost came to life for the audience.

It's a classic story – and people of all ages will enjoy it. It reminds us about the healing power of friendship, of nature, and of imagination. What I liked most about this movie was the performance by the child actors. For such a young age, they were brilliant and portrayed their characters impeccably. The HItcher

Listen to your parents when they say not to talk to strangers...

College students and boyfriend-girlfriend Jim and Grace are on their way to their spring break vacation as they travel through the New Mexico desert one rainy night. They stumble upon a hitch-hiker in need of a lift, and decide to be kind and offer him one.

On the car ride, the hitch-hiker - John Ryder – proves himself to be a complete psycho when he threatens the couple with his knife. Somehow through the struggle Jim manages to throw psychotic John out of the car.

The next morning, as the couple is continuing on their journey, they see a young family about to pick up the hitcher in their car. Jim and Grace know that they cannot leave the family with him, and they do their best to warn them. During their efforts, they get into a car accident. As they try to recover, the walk back up to the car to find the family in the car stabbed to death.

John is still alive and on the hunt, and he wants the couple. What started off as a teen movie with a fun couple on their way to spring break, turns into a bloody game of cat and mouse that offers little scenes of relief for the audience.

I was on the edge of my seat for pretty well the majority of the movie. There are a fair share of gory scenes that are quite disturbing, so I strongly advise the younger crowd to stay away from this film.

It's hard to believe there are people out there that are that psychotic, that smart, and that skilled in the ability to kill others. It's very frightening, and the villain in this – John (played by Sean Bean) – is brilliant and the main source of entertainment for the whole film. It definitely isn't the best thriller / horror film I have ever seen, but it was very entertaining so I will still recommend it. Flight Plan

Kyle Pratt (played by Jodie Foster) is an aviation engineer. After her husband passes away in Berlin, she and her 6 year old daughter take his body back to New York with them on a sad, quiet flight back.

Kyle and her daughter gracefully fall asleep together. After 3 hours into the flight, Kyle awakes to find that her daughter has gone missing. It's not a small plane that Kyle can just walk up and down the aisle and look for her missing child – it is a gigantic double-decker plane. That leaves a lot of ground to cover for a frantic mother.

To make things even more scary, as Kyle desperately tries to get help from the staff and people on board, no one even remembers seeing her daughter. The crew somewhat help her search for her child, but know one finds her. The captain of the plane slowly approaches Kyle and informs her that her daughter never even boarded the plane – she was in fact killed at the same time her husband died.

Is Kyle crazy? Or is there something deeper going on she doesn't know about? With few clues to work with, Kyle takes matters into her own hands before she or her daughter end up dead.

Another ultimate suspense film starring Jodie Foster – if “edge-of-your-seat suspense” is what you're looking for – this movie will not disappoint you. There's shocking twists and turns and even you will be left confused even after you thought you had it all figured out.

Free Willy

Jesse is a homeless orphan that is lost, misguided, and alone. He acts out his frustrations by doing dumb things to impress his other delinquent friends while getting out some of his anger. One day he vandalizes a marina and gets caught, and even though he somewhat gets off the hook – he' stuck having to clean up after the mess that he made.

He gets taken into custody by the city and then placed in the care of new parents. Jesse is still frustrated and feels alone, he has trouble opening up to these new people.

While cleaning up and volunteering at the marina, the whale that lives there seems to take a liking to Jesse. The whale, Willy, was taken away from his parents in the ocean. He too feels like an orphan, and even though Jesse and Willy are from a completely different species, it appears they just might have quite a bit in common.

Willy and Jesse then develop a special bond and realize how much they are in need of each other's friendship in their lives. Willy teaches Jesse that he is not alone, that's okay to feel frustrated, but he also teaches him how to open up to the people in his life that matter.

Jesse comes to realize that the owners of the marina are not keeping Willy around because they like him – but because he is supposed to be filling an entertainment purpose and he hasn't been performing, the owner wants to get rid of Willy. Jesse is the only one with a bond strong enough to get through to Willy, what will be do to fix the problem? Jesse is just a boy – will he be able to Free Willy?

This movie, released in 1993, was so successful and loved by audiences everywhere that the reign of Free Willy has even continued on to 2010. Yes, there were 3 sequels to this movie, and the latest one was released this year! (Starring Bindi Irwin – yes The late Crocodile Hunter's 11 year old daughter!)

Zoolander

This could possibly be one of the funniest movies that Ben Stiller ever starred in (and he's been in a lot of funny movies). He stars as Derek Zoolander, a model with a famous look that's being replaced by younger or fresher models in the industry and faces an identity crisis.

He may not be the smartest, but he is really, really good looking. But is there more to life than just good looks? Derek searches for answers and wants to discover a deeper meaning in life. In the midst of this, he is hired by fashion designer Mugatu (played by Will Ferrell) and brainwashed without him even knowing it.

Mugatu is planning on assassinating the Malaysian Prime Minister while he is visiting New York in pursuit of legalizing child labor for his fashion business – and Derek is his dull tool that will do it. Derek has no way of catching on he is so severely brain washed.
Lucky for him, he is close with Time Magazine journalist Matilda. Matilda catches on to Mugatu's schemes, and helps Derek in the realization of this.

But there's still so much more to this movie: with walk offs, gasoline fights, befriending a former rival model – Hansel, tiny cell phones, and patented looks like “Blue Steel”, there's never a dull moment in Zoolander.

The Strangers

Kristen and James just left a friend's wedding and drove to James' isolated cottage to sleep for the night. The tension between the pair is hard to watch and hard to decode – but you can tell they have had a disagreement over their relationship. It's quiet, and it's sad. An unlikely mood for the beginning of a horror film.

Then there were 3 loud knocks on the door, at 4 in the morning. Who would be visiting at this time of night in this kind of an isolated place? Kristen is shook by the stranger at the door, a confused woman whose face is covered by the darkness. James shoos her away when he deems her as lost and confused, and then takes off to buy some cigarettes.

Kristen is now alone in the cottage, and she walks around in sadness after that night's events. Then there were more knocks, and Kristen realizes she is not alone at the cottage. When James returns, he finds Kristen wretchedly upset, and he scopes out the place.

What they come to find is that the danger is not only outside – but it is inside. A small group of mysterious locals covering their faces with masks are terrorizing the scared couple, and there is no telling who will be living by the time morning comes. With their car shot, they have no option but to stay the night at the cottage, defending their lives.

This movie was beyond terrifying in my opinion. This movie, unlike other horror movies I have ever seen, did not have any suspenseful background music – and this proved to be very effective. As Kristen and James walk around in eerie silence – there I no telling of when something scary is about to happen. The painful silence makes things actually realistic, like you were one of the victims in the horror movie.

The worst part about this movie is that it is actually based on true events. There was actually a couple that was terrorized by locals in an isolated place, and although there was no telling of what actually happened in the cottage that night – the evidence the next morning painted a horrifying picture that hinted at the possibilities.

I do not recommend this movie if you are someone that gets scared easily! Especially if you are someone that lives in the country or in an isolated place – you may find it hard to sleep at night for awhile after watching this. Other than that, if you like getting scared, this is the movie for you! Click on one of the links below to watch videos online. Cars

Yet another masterpiece created by Disney's Pixar – Cars brings its audience into the world of cars and their fun and entertaining personalities.

The main character/car is Lightening McQueen, an all-star hotshot race car that's wrapped up in fame and fortune and popularity. He prides himself on his trophies and sponsorships, and doesn't find meaning in much else.

While on his way to the Piston Cup Race he has an unexpected detour. McQueen finds himself stranded on Route 66 of a small town called Radiator Springs. Here, a lot of sleepy cars live quietly and contently but feel as though they have been forgotten by the world around them.

Upon his arrival, McQueen destroyed half of the road and some of the property, and he is forced to stay in town and repair the damage he caused before they release him on his way to the cup. Not only is he stranded in the middle of nowhere, but he is stranded with his bad attitude that has never given him true friends in his life.

Some friends that he meets along the way include Mater (his rusty yet trusty tow-truck friend) Sally (a beautiful Porsche whom he falls for), and Doc (an older friend that keeps a secret that just may change McQueen forever). McQueen will soon discover that life isn't about the finish line, it's about the drive there.

Cars is wildly entertaining, endearing, and comedic for all ages. It has great characters, a great plot, and a great message. I would recommend this movie to pretty well anyone who is anyone! I watched this movie for the first time a drive-in and it couldn't have been a better spot to watch it. Did you know? The theme song for this movie “Life is a Highway” was a cover by Rascal Flats (one of my favorite country bands).

There's even a Cars 2 that will be released in 2011! Look out for trailers for it soon. If you haven't seen this movie yet – I would strongly suggest seeing it, especially before the second one comes out. I promise you will like it! Raise Your Voice

American sweetheart Hilary Duff stars as Terri – a young girl with big dreams and a voice that's destined for stardom. She yearns to go to a music school in LA of high prestige – but her father will not let her go.

Her loving brother put together a film of her talent and submitted it to the school – giving her acceptance into the program without her even knowing it. Before she found out though or could even thank him, he passed away in a car accident.

She attempts to try and move on with her life – but finds it very difficult. She finds her identity again through her voice and stays strong through her brother's memory.

When she finally gets to the art school of her dreams – she quickly realizes that life there isn't as happy go lucky as she thought it was. The work is hard, the fellow classmates are competitive, and worst of all she's away from home and the people she loves.

With an end of term competition that it all comes down to, a romance with a cute Brit boy, and a showdown with the school rival – it was a life changing experience for Terri.

What did I think about this movie? Well – it's a typical feel-good film, and its definitely intended for younger audiences. It's the perfect sleepover film for younger girls. I believe it has a good message and would be entertaining for this age group.

Personally – I am a fan of Duff. She is one of the only female stars that the public watched grow and not become a crazy alcoholic with her panties showing. She never created a music video where she wore a crazy outfit that made parent's shut the TV off, and she always stayed true to her sweetheart style. Therefore, for younger girls especially, I will always recommend her films. This one's a feel-good favorite.

Pay It Forward

Sometimes the simplest idea can make the biggest difference. Kevin Spacey stars alongside Haley Joel Osment and Helen Hunt in this moving film that bears a strong message that this world could use a lot more of: Pay It Forward.

When someone does something nice for you, don't pay them back – pay it forward. It goes like this, if someone does something for you, rather than returning the favor for them, you pay the favor forward by doing something nice and meaningful for 3 other people. Each of those people will then help another 3 people each. It is a simple idea that bears an ability to make a big difference.

These are the rules: 1. It has to be something that really helps people. 2. It has to be something that they can't do by themselves. 3. I do it for them, and they do it for 3 other people.

Kevin Spacey plays Eugene, a teacher with a plan to make a difference. He puts in place an assignment for his young class to think of an idea to change the world and then put it into action. Little Trevor (Haley Joel Osment) comes from a broken home – yet comes up with the best and most effective idea of “paying it forward”.

Trevor actually succeeded with his idea as he touches the lives of not only himself, but his alcoholic mother, his emotionally scarred teacher, his homeless grandmother, and even complete strangers.

This movie has a beautiful concept that I would love to see be put in place in this world. The movie was amazing – yet disturbing at points, and carries a heavy message we all should hear.

Annie

It's the musical that stole everyone's hearts. The story of a young orphan, her whole life wanting parents to love her and spreading love to all around her through her beautiful voice and kind heart.

Annie was a young orphan growing up in the worst of orphanages where she was worked to the bone and treated terribly. The other orphan girls that lived with her all shared one common goal: to one day have a loving family to call their own. Annie would reach out to them and give them hope through her beautiful voice and strong sense of hope for a brighter future.

Annie is given the opportunity to temporarily live with billionaire Oliver “Daddy” Warbucks. But she woos him into being permanently adopted. But all she really wants is her real parents that she has been told her whole life are alive and waiting for her. Daddy Warbucks offers a cash reward for her true parents to come forth, and greedy people everywhere can't help but try to take advantage of the situation.

I watched Annie as a young child and have very fond memories tied to it. I can remember the songs and the heart-warming story line, and I can remember how much I loved it. I don't think there really is a suggested age for this movie because I think anyone would appreciate it, but I would really recommend it to young children so they can enjoy it as much as I did when I was a kid.

Ms. Congeniality

When the Miss America Pageant receives a threat from one of the country's most wanted criminals, “The Citizen”, the FBI must come up with a plan to get into the system, protect the pageant and the people that surround it, and hopefully capture the “Citizen”.

All they need to do is find an FBI agent that's willing to take on the role by posing as a pageant contestant. Sounds easy enough right? Walk in heels, strut in a swimsuit, and look flawless in a gown. Well, the FBI is full of men, and there's only one female who looks good in a swimsuit – Gracie (Sandra Bullock).

Gracie was always the tom boy. She can't walk elegantly, she doesn't even own a pair of heels, and as everyone refers to her – she can be known as quite a car wreck. But she's the only one who is half fit for the position.

Gracie decides to take on the role – and although it may appear to simple, it may be one of the hardest things Gracie will ever have to do. Legs waxed, eyebrows fixed, hair done, make-up done, etiquette lessons, and a new wardrobe – almost the perfect recipe for a pageant star.

Sandra Bullock is brilliant in this role. She plays the perfect “unsuspecting beauty” that is completely out of her element in her girly-girl undercover role. She's funny, she's strong, and she proves to be an inspiration to girls everywhere, as she continues to be in Miss Congeniality 2.

This is one of those light films that are funny, have a pretty good plot, and I could watch it time and time again and still enjoy it.

Sixteen Candles

Allow me to take you back to 1984 where floppy disks were a commodity, hair teasing was out of control, and boys might have worn tighter pants than girls. Yes the 1980's were a great time – and are famous for their collection of amazing teen flicks.

Among the list of the greatest titles, you will likely find Sixteen Candles. Starring Molly Ringwald and Anthony Michael Hall, this movie is one of the kick starts to the 1980's reign of teen movies.

The story begins with Samantha Baker (Molly Ringwald) waking up on her 16th birthday, only to find that her family – so wrapped up in her sister's wedding plans – have completely forgot that it's her special day. Sam becomes frustrated as her day gets worse and worse, and she just seems invisible to everyone. Just your average girl, Sam loses hope of ever finding a dream guy for a boyfriend as she never gets noticed by anyone at school.

In study hall, Sam fills out a questionnaire revealing her crush on high school hottie Jake. When unsuccessfully passing it to her ½ asleep best friend, Jake gets a hold of what Sam wrote without her knowing. The day just gets worse and worse – her grandparents come to visit and take over her bedroom, her little brother is a pain in the neck, and her parents ask her to take a foreign exchange student with her to the dance. To make things worse, the most annoying geek in the school won't stop hitting on her!

The school dance starts off a crazy night that may turn everything in Sam's life around. With funny wisecracks and a wide array of characters that anyone can relate to, this movie will take you back and make you miss those wild high school nights.

Shrek Forever After

The first three Shrek movies: Shrek, Shrek 2, and Shrek The Third were hits and remain cherished by their fans. A great cast, an imaginative storyline, catchy music, rolling on the floor humor, and fun animation were the perfect recipe for one of the best family comedy movie series of all time.

And now comes the 4th: Shrek Forever After – only this time it's going to be a huge hit in theaters as this is the first time ever that a Shrek movie is hitting the big screen in 3-D ANIMATION!

This is going to be a must see for every family. Personally, however, I do not just recommend this flick for families. I have watched every Shrek so far and have enjoyed every minute of every one of them. The humor isn't corny – but is actually quite clever and hilarious – the storyline makes sense, the characters are intriguing, and there are usually feel-good messages and “moral-of-the-stories” that everyone can relate to.

In Shrek Forever After, Shrek the new “family man”, misses his days of being a vicious, scary ogre. He makes a deal with the sneaky Rumpelstiltskin, where he lands in an alternate universe, a very different land of Far, Far, Away. Now, ogres are the ones that are chased and hunted – Shrek has never met Fiona, all his friends have had something about them flipped upside-down, and its up to Shrek to put everything back to normal and restore everyone's world.

Serendipity

Do you believe in fate? Do you believe that everything in this world that is supposed to happen will happen? Or do you believe something different?

There's no way to go around it in Serendipity – it was all meant to be, and there's nothing you can do to escape it.

Sara and Johnathon were both doing some shopping at Bloomingdale's in New York, and both reached for the last pair of black gloves. They were both in relationships at the time, but they still go off together and have a beautiful afternoon together – debating who would get the pair of gloves.

John was very interested in Sara, and vice versa, but Sara is from England and didn't think it would be possible for them to ever be. John asks her for some contact information – but Sara decides instead – they should put fate to the test to see if they were truly meant to be together.

Sara puts her name and number in a used book that floats from person to person and store to store, and John puts his name and number on a 5-dollar bill. They then put the book into a used book store, and give the 5 dollar bill to a newspaper sales man. Sara then tells John that she believes if those items ever come into their possession again, they were meant to be.

From this day on, John chases the fate that he is unsure of, and Sara will question if leaving her love life in the hands of fate was the right thing to do.

Personally, I do believe that in this world there is a certain amount of things that were meant to be. I do believe that we also have a certain amount of free will – and we make the bed we lay in. If we want something to come true in this life – it is up to us, but I do believe that the bigger things that are beyond our control will eventually come to us.

Serendipity is a beautiful movie that touches on the issues of free will vs. destiny, and is a romantic tale that tells us that we cannot escape love.

Sleepless in Seattle

Tom Hanks stars in this beautifully romantic tale as Sam Baldwin, a recently widowed father, that struggles to sleep through his pain of losing his wife each night at his home in Seattle.

Sam is a loving father, but his son Jonah can really notice his father's struggle. Jonah calls into a late-night radio show to reach out for help for his father's problems. The radio announcer is touched by Jonah's story. When Sam walks in while they are on the phone, he reluctantly joins the radio show.

Sam begins to tell the voice on the other end of the phone the story of his deeply loving relationship with his late wife and his current state in her absence. Female listeners everywhere that tune in listen to Sam speak and melt at his words. They write letters to him in hopes of being the ones to relieve him of his pain.

Annie Reed (Meg Ryan) is one of those listeners – even though she is engaged to be married shortly. She cares for her fiance, but fears their marriage is based solely off security and safety – she fears that her marriage will lack the excitement that love should bring. Touched by Sam's words, she writes in a letter to him on a whim.

Guided by fate, Annie takes off to Seattle to see where destiny takes her...

Sam on his his own has a lot of great things – a son, a great job, thousands of women after him, and much more. Annie on her own has a lot of great things including a fiance. Yet they both have a sense of incompleteness. Will they ever meet and become each other's missing link?

If you are a fan of romantic films, this movie should be a staple for you. If romantic films is not your thing, I would still recommend this movie as it is one of the best of all times. Not all games are harmless...

What started off as an intriguing, innocent board game – called Jumanji - for young Allan and Becky, ended up turning into a nightmare that would affect them for the rest of their lives.

When it was Allan's turn, the game board read “In the jungle you must wait, until the dice reads 5 or 8” Allan was swallowed by the game whole and was forced to live in the terrifying jungles of Jumanji – until someone else rolled a 5, or 8.

It is now 25 years later, and young Judy and Peter are exploring their new house where young Alan used to live, and they uncover the dusty board game and decide that they want to play. After a couple of nasty turns that has them scared to death, Peter roles a 5, where Alan is finally released back into the house. Now he is a jungle man – covered head to toe in hair – and learns he must keep on playing the game for anything to go back to normal ever again.

They track down Sarah Whittle, who is now an adult, to play the game again. She's terrified, but has to get over her fear and play anyway as they realize once you start the game, you have to finish it.

The game continues on as the player's deepest darkest nightmares come to reality. The dangers of the game starts to intensify as the city becomes taken over by the Jumanji terrors and it is now up to Allan, Sarah, Judy, and Peter to save everyone.

Starring Robin Williams, Bonnie Hunt, Kirsten Dunst, and Bradley Pierce, Jumanji has gone down in movie history as one of the most imaginative stories of all time.
