Precious

Presented by Oprah Winfrey, comes the story of an obese, African American, poor teenage girl exposed to an overwhelming amount of abuse, in which she must endure alone and suffer through without anyone to turn to.

A father that rapes her and impregnates her twice, a mother that severely abuses her emotionally and physically, and a world that offers no love or support for her, Claireece “Precious” Jones is alone and scared. She attempts to save herself at her hardest of times by imagining herself on the cover of a magazine, having a perfect light-skinned boyfriend, and being in a music video on BET. Her imagination allows her to escape to a world where people may actually love her and pay attention to her.

When suspended from her school for getting pregnant for the 2nd time at the young age of 16, Precious gets put into an alternate education class. She meets Ms. Rain, her new teacher, and begins to receive guidance counseling from Mrs. Weiss (played by Mariah Carrey). Here, Precious begins to learn to read for the first time in her life and also learns a lot about love, about life, about growing and overcoming, and about her own identity.

Based on the novel “Push” by Sapphire, comes an inspirational film that focuses on the human capacity to grow, learn, and rise above our greatest obstacles in life. As the trailer simply puts it: Life is hard, Life is short, Life is painful, Life is rich, Life is precious. Disturbing, inspiring, truthful, and so much more – this movie has a lot of lessons to offer its audience.

Receiving 2 Oscars and receiving beautiful reviews by its critics, you won't want to miss a film of this size. To watch this movie and learn from it as much as I did, click the links below:
