On the surface, this is a movie that appears to be about high school football. But it is so much more than that as you will come to know.
Remember the Titans - taking place in 1971 - is a story about Coach Boone (played by Denzel Washington), an African-American who starts his first year as coach at a high school who just opened its doors to African-American students - a huge point of controversy in a world that wasn't ready for such a big change.
The football team struggles to overcome racial differences at training camp, but soon learn to look past skin color and as a result become a team of undefeated strength and courage. Yet the world around them doesn't seem to want to follow suit. Their town is so consumed with politics and imagined racial entitlement, yet the team continues to overcome these difficulties and give their town a football team to believe in.
Chronicling the true 1971 story of the T.C Williams football team of Alexandria, Virginia, this movie reminds us of the hardships that we have come so far from. We remember how people like the players, coaches, and family members of the Titans football team changed the way people looked away from a skin color focus, and turned to a person focus, all through something that united everyone in a small town – the enjoyable, high energy game of foot ball.
Personally, I have never met someone that didn't love this movie. It's extremely entertaining - with a perfect cast, a beautiful story, an intense sport, and a deep message we all need to look back and remember.
